Lessons, stories, and reflections from the Goat Midwife

What can you expect with a goat pregnancy? What do you do if things go wrong when goats give birth? What happens when you have a challenging newborn kid?

Seasoned goat farmer Deborah Niemann, author of Raising Goats Naturally, answers these questions and more by distilling the stories and experiences from over 650 goat births.

Coverage includes:

  • The differences between normal goat pregnancies
  • Necessary C-sections
  • Incidents that may turn deadly serious.

There is nothing about goat care that creates more anticipation, excitement, frustration, and fear than birthing goats. For both new and experienced goat owners, Goats Giving Birth illuminates the joy, the sadness, and everything in between when birthing pregnant goats, giving you the confidence to handle a large spectrum of goat pregnancies and help birth happy, thriving kids.

"It's the most wonderful (and frightening) time of the year! From normal births to problem deliveries, all new goat owners could use an experienced mentor during kidding season. Goats Giving Birth is like having a long-time goat-owning friend waiting at your fingertips."

I laughed, I cried...

I haven't had a chance to sit down and read this until my first 2 does of this year are 9 days from kidding. I read it in one sitting and from laughing at Deborah's panicked run across the yard with a mouthful of tamale pie to catch babies, to bawling my eyes out at Coco's sad story, I loved every word of it! I always work myself up into a fit, scared to death something might go wrong with my beloved goats and at the same time, ecstatic over seeing those little bouncers careening off their patient moms as they try out their springs!

I was also pleasantly surprised that the book is mostly anecdotes rather than fact presented textbook style. The information soaks into my brain much better and stays with me. Thank you for sharing your wonderful goats!

I’m reading and re-reading

I’m reading and rereading but I also find this book very calming. It’s nice to know how to handle a problem and to just have that information available but it’s nice to know the normal and to wait. It’s very interesting how we’re always in a hurry to help And we need to wait mother nature has a way of solving the problem. This is well worth having in your library.

Love it - Wanted more!

I just love Deborah's books, I have her Raising Goats Naturally book as well, which is chock full of great information regarding her experience as a goat keeper. This book is no different! I love the stories of her past goat births, ranging from textbook births to c-sections and overall difficult births. This book is a great reference for the birthing season, I will surely flip through this book in the spring! It is a rather short book, even though she has been at hundreds of goat births. I would have liked more stories! Overall, an amazing read and I recommend it!

Very Informative

I like the way the information is set up. It covers so many topics and helps me calm down during first time kidding experience. I feel more comfortable with anticipating the birthing experience.

Fantastic Resources!

I could not be happier with all three books I purchased from The Thrifty Homesteader. All are full
of important information for successfully raising healthy, happy goats, as well as making the most of everything you grow on your homestead. I highly recommend all of Deborah’s books!
